Shillong: The District administration has imposed curfew in Mahendraganj, South West Garo Hills after the angry mob attacked the police station and deface the public property.
Sources said, the mob attacked the police station and a vehicle in protest against an alleged firing by police on a mentally ill person who was identified as Ahidul Islam (35), who ran away after snatching an INSAS rifle from a police constable.
In a statement, police said, Ahidul Islam, the night before was trying to harm the villagers of Nadichar. On being informed, the police had reached the area and then this person tried to harm the policemen also. Unfortunately this man successfully snatched the rifle from the police after a huge fight and one of the police fell into a river.
Ahidul after he got a rifle he ran away and fled from the scene. But Sub Inspector, ER Marak shoot to the sky to make him scared. But the rumours claim that the Police have shoot Ahidul Islam. But contradictory stories emerged in connection with the incident.
In the meantime, the District administrator announced the curfew under section 144 CrPC at Mahendraganj, from today till tomorrow 8 AM.
Meanwhile, the police team swung into action and search operations were carried out in the border area, said Asst Inspector General of Police (A) Meghalaya.
